The series The Murderbot Diaries is literally a story about slavery. The main character is an escaped slave on the run for MOST OF THE SERIES. This is a story about the hellishness of a society run by corporations and the ways they exploit people and take away people’s agency and choices.

It’s also a story that’s incredibly relatable to queer people. The main character is sex repulsed, rejects any gendered language to describe itself, and feels like an outsider.

I am enjoying this series immensely and I am going to be obsessed with it For Forever.

Out of curiosity as I’m reading this series, I looked up online to see if there were any adaptations in the works (hoping that was not the case, because there is no way this story could be satisfyingly adapted into a traditional live action setting)

The first thing that I see is that they cast a white. Cisgender. Man. With blonde hair and blue eyes. As the main character. The agender, autistic coded main character who escapes slavery and oppression. Wow. What a revolutionary casting choice. (Sarcasm)

AND ITS BEING ADAPTED INTO LIVE ACTION BY **APPLE TV**?????? APPLE, THE MOTHERFUCKERS WHO DIRECTLY BENEFIT AND PROFIT FROM SLAVE LABOR???

I have not been in this fandom long enough to reasonably judge others' takes however. "EPIC fans are so silly to characterize odysseus as feeling guilty for his actions don't you know he's a war criminal" is definitely a wild one. like first of all to each their own so settle down and let people enjoy things ok. and secondly making choices with a bad outcome, even knowingly and deliberately, does not exclude the possibility of feeling bad about it later. in fact it makes for a much more in depth character because then you get to explore what he does or doesn't feel guilt over, and why, and if that guilt ever edges into regret or not.

I'll do a blanket answer, because I answered a very similar question about my feelings regarding trans people, so I think a blanket statement will just be good to apply to every "How do you feel about _______ people" question:

I believe that the only thing that determines if a person is good or bad is their character and how they treat others. I don't care about sexual orientation, skin color, ability, religion, immigration status, or anything else.

If someone is kind, I like them. Even if their idea of "kind" and mine differ, as long as I can tell they're trying their best in this bizarre world and not excluding or being cruel to anyone.

I believe the laws and policies in the US, intentionally or otherwise, dehumanize and disenfranchise just about anyone not straight and white, and when people say "All lives matter", it'd be great if that were the case. It'd be great if we lived in a world where there was genuine equality and we could say that with full confidence. But we don't- certain groups and peoples are treated as less and face difficulties and prejudices that I, a white woman with blue eyes, simply do not. The law is not applied equally. People are not perceived equally by each other. We have to do what we can to try to fix that.

Everyone is valid, everyone's experiences and stories are valid. But life is complicated, and right now it's unbelievably loud. I know. We can't always stop and listen and learn what people's stories and experiences are, so the best I think anyone can do is just give each other grace.

My belief and creed is live and let live, love and let love. Everyone is out there fighting their own battles, at the very least, don't make anyone's battle more difficult. I respect and like people who follow that.

I care more about the soul than the wrapper it comes in, and I wish we could get to a place as a species where that was all that mattered.
